How to keep your home safe from water

You may think that your home is completely safe from everything.  However, that may not be completely true.

There are things that we may not think about that can damage our home.

Water is something that can do a lot of damage to our homes.  We should take the necessary steps to protect our home and keep unwanted water from doing damage.

One way to protect our home from water is to make sure that we inspect our plumbing.  This will include the plumbing in the walls and floors as well.  Try to keep an eye on how it looks and if there are any parts that look like they are wearing thin or starting to crack or leak.  You should do this for all the areas of plumbing that you have in your home.

If you have a leaky toilet or shower, you should make sure that you replace it.  This is something that over time can cause a huge problem for your home.  It can damage the floors and ceilings if any that are underneath.  It always best to replace the item or do the necessary repairs before the problem gets any worse.

Make sure that your toilets are working properly.  Check to see if they are shutting off once you have flushed them and that water is not continuously running in the tank. This could lead to problems later and maybe even make the toilet over flow, which would make a huge mess in your home.

Check your hot water tank.  If it is staring to rust and corrode, you may want to think about getting a new one.  Usually a water heater will last about twelve to fifteen years.  If your water heater is looking kind of old or starting to leak, you may want to think about getting a new one before you have a major problem on your hands.

Check your roof to see if you have any missing shingles.  If you are, you should take the steps to replace them.  If you would have a hard rain, you may find that your roof would start to leak which can cause damage inside your home.

If your basement is getting water from the rain also, you may want to have seen about getting any cracks in the foundation repaired.  This is usually the problem and once it is taken care of, there will be no more water in your basement.  Also a dehumidifier is always a good choice for any basement to keep the dampness away.
