Protect Your Home Against the Cold

The weather in the wintertime can get cold. Sometimes it can be a little bit chilly in the spring and fall too.

When it gets to the point of being below zero, the best thing for you to do is to stay inside your home were it is warm. That is the best way to protect your self and your family from the cold. Keeping yourself in the home and warm is going to be important to surviving the winter.

If you have places to go, you can just bundle yourself up and go. What I mean by that is to wear boots, warm pants, a heavy winter coat, gloves, scarf, and a winter hat. That should keep you warm enough until you return home. If you have a garage keep your vehicle, in there so that way you will not have to brush snow off of it and freeze while your doing it. Keep your items in the home away from open flames, so you don’t start a fire. Put your winter gear on hangers and keep them in boxes or in closets if possible.

If you do not have a garage to keep your vehicle in, buy yourself one of those remote car starters. This way you can start your car ten minutes before you are ready to leave. Then when you go to leave you will not be that cold when you get in your car. If you left your heat in your car on that may of melted the snow of your car so that way you don’t have to do it. Your protection against the cold can also involve your bundling up, going to the car, starting the car, and then head back to the house as the car warms up for a few minutes. This will prevent an accident while you are driving, because you won’t be too cold.

If you have children that you cannot keep in the house because they do not think it is that could out, let them go just a few minutes and they will soon find out that they want to come back in the house. Tell them that if they get cold to come back inside to warm up. To keep them from getting frost bitten buy them extra gloves so that way if they get them too wet you can give them a dry pair. Never let them out there to long, if it is too cold out because they could either get sick or get frost bitten. Children are not going to realize how hot radiators can be at times in the winter months. Avoid putting kerosene heaters in areas where you can’t see the heaters at all times to prevent a child from playing with the heater or putting something on the heater. This will avoid their starting a fire as they will not be able to get near the kerosene heater without your knowing it.

In the spring time it may still be chilly out, but not freezing out like the wintertime. Therefore, if you just wear a sweatshirt you should be fine. The fall is when it starts to get cold so it is usually a good thing for you to either wear a jacket or atleast carry one with you. The best way to keep yourself protected from the cold in the wintertime is to stay in your home as much as possible. Every spring is a good time to have your chimney cleaned. Keeping your home warm is important, but you also want to be sure you are safe. Have your chimney cleaned, or at least inspected, every year to prevent problems with your heating system, and to prevent potential fire problems in the home.
